SUMMARY:Community Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Community Contra Dance\nFriday\, January 17\, 2025\, from 7 – 9 pm\nIn the tradition of New England’s earliest settlers\, The Granite and the Redding Grange #15 invite you to a New England Contra Dance to celebrate the traditions of community dancing! Light snacks and refreshments will be served. You don’t need to bring a partner or have any prior experience. Tickets are required\, and the suggested donation is $10. \nCheck out this article from the Redding Sentinel: Swing your partner ’round at a New England contra dance \nTHE CALLER\nDon Heinold\, hailing from Rhode Island\, has been calling at dances\, weddings\, and parties all over New England for over 14 years. Don is also known for teaching the Rotary (country) Waltz. \nTHE MUSICIANS\nMickey Koth on fiddle and various wind instruments and John Kalinowski on accordion\, concertina\, and fife (but not all at the same time!) are an energetic and exuberant traditional acoustic duo with roots in Irish\, Scottish\, French-Canadian\, jazz\, and classical music. Mickey and John’s playing has been described as “St. Patrick at a hoedown.” As one fan put it\, they will change your O’Doul’s to Guinness! Together\, they will amaze you! \nCONTRA DANCE\nContra dance (also contradance\, contra-dance\, and other variant spellings) is a form of folk dancing\, made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance\, Scottish country dance\, and French dance styles in the 17th century. Sometimes described as New England folk dance or Appalachian folk dance\, contra dances can be found around the world\, but are most common in the United States (periodically held in nearly every state)\, Canada\, and other Anglophone countries. – Wikipedia \n \nREDDING GRANGE #15\nRedding Grange #15 strengthens our town by gathering its individuals\, families\, and youth in order to promote agriculture\, community\, service\, health\, and to foster fellowship and well-being. SUMMARY:Community Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Community Contra Dance\nFriday\, February 28\, 2025\, 6:30 – 9 PM\, Doors at 6 PM\nIn the tradition of New England’s earliest settlers\, The Granite and Redding Grange #15 invite you to a New England Contra Dance to celebrate the traditions of community dancing! Light snacks and refreshments will be served. You don’t need to bring a partner or have any prior experience. We’ll start with a beginner lesson at 6:30 PM which will be a fun introduction for all levels. Tickets are $15. \nCheck out this article from the Redding Sentinel about our last event: Swing your partner ’round at a New England contra dance \nTHE CALLER\nDon Heinold\, hailing from Rhode Island\, has been calling at dances\, weddings\, and parties all over New England for over 14 years. – Wikipedia \n \nCO-SPONSORED BY REDDING GRANGE #15\nRedding Grange #15 strengthens our town by gathering its individuals\, families\, and youth in order to promote agriculture\, community\, service\, health\, and to foster fellowship and well-being. SUMMARY:The Gilbert & Bennett Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:The Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company provided $10\,000 for the construction of the first modern schoolhouse in Wilton. Nick Foster examines the company’s role in education in the 19th and 20th centuries. \nThis lecture will be co-sponsored by Wilton Historical Society. The first modern school in Wilton was built with a $10\,000 donation from the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company. This building was an indicator of a transitional time in Wilton’s history\, with immigration and industrialization fueling Gilbert & Bennett’s rapid growth and the town’s transformation into the suburban community it is today. In this lecture\, Wilton Historical Society’s director\, Nick Foster\, will discuss the rise of the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company and Wilton’s often uneven relationship with education in the 19th and early 20th centuries. \nThis event will occur at the Wilton Historical Society at 224 Danbury Rd\, Wilton\, CT. Please use the map link below if you need directions. \nCo-Sponsor: Wilton Historical Society \n \nDestination: Georgetown\, Part Five\nJoin us for a five-part lecture series\, Destination: Georgetown\, where we explore the impact of the Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company on the development of Georgetown and surrounding towns. \nThe Destination: Georgetown lecture series will explore the lived experience of the Gilbert & Bennett Wire Mill complex in Georgetown and its involvement in the creation of “place.” Closed in 1989\, the mill remains a landmark tied to the development of the area – the settlement of Swedish immigrants\, education and the construction of a school\, and the local labor movement. This lecture series will present a new look at the mill and help understand Georgetown as a place of cooperation and diversity.

SUMMARY:GRASP Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Grief Recovery After Substance Passing (GRASP) was created to offer understanding\, compassion\, and support for those who have lost someone they love through addiction and overdose. \nToo many times we suffer not only the death of the person we love\, but we become isolated in our grief. We feel\, and too many times it is true\, that no one understands our pain. But at GRASP\, we do. We have suffered this same kind of loss and we have found the love and connection that only those who have lived this loss can give another. And while the pain of this loss will always be with us\, we have found through GRASP that we don’t have to walk the road that is our pain alone. We walk it together; hand in hand and heart to heart. \nGRASP is a discussion group that provides help\, compassion\, and most of all understanding for individuals who have had someone they love die as a result of substance use. \nLearn more by visiting their website at grasphelp.org. Preregistration is requested if you’d like to attend. Contact Greg Kimmet at reddinggrasp@gmail.com or (973) 768-3497. \nThis event is part of our Free Weekly Wednesdays program sponsored by Meadow Ridge.
