DESCRIPTION:Bardin-Niskala Duo: Celebrating Identity Through Music\nSunday\, March 8\, 3-5 PM (Doors open at 2 PM.)\nClassical Music Sundays\nTickets: $35 \nUsing both video and an immersive musical performance\, the Bardin-Niskala Duo will expertly weave together personal stories and music to evoke a powerful emotional experience. \nTheir upcoming performance at The Granite will feature three premieres by emerging immigrant composers\, combining music with their stories of struggle and triumph. There will be a Q&A after the performance. \nThis is a project about individual yet universal human journeys that make the U.S. the place it is today. With the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States\, we have a momentous opportunity to celebrate this historic event\, while also cherishing it as a time for reflection\, considering all the stories that have shaped our home. \n \nTHE BARDIN-NISKALA DUO \nThe Bardin-Niskala Duo (cello and piano) is a nonprofit ensemble that uses music to explore notions of identity\, belonging\, and community to fight racism\, promote cultural awareness\, and celebrate humanity. The Duo commissions ALAANA (African\, Latinx\, Asian\, Arab\, and Native American) and other underrepresented composers to write pieces that are based on folksongs and children’s songs of their particular cultures and countries. \nThrough these commissions and the performances of these works\, the Duo promotes these composers and opens dialogue with and amongst audience members on the notions of homeland\, community\, and belonging\, on the complexity and uniqueness of various cultures\, and on the challenges of navigating life in this country as a bi-cultural\, multi-cultural\, or minority person. Each commissioned work is preceded by a personal video message from the composer\, where they discuss their own journey towards identity and a sense of belonging\, their community\, and the historical or personal significance of the folk or children’s song they chose as an inspiration for their work. \nFormed in early 2021\, the Duo has performed across the United States from Mississippi to Minnesota and Hawai’i to New York. They have presented at regional and national conferences and have been awarded four residencies at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Their performances are offered in concert halls\, schools\, universities\, and community centers\, and range from traditional concerts to more informal performances mingled with open dialogue between the Duo and audience members. Active educators\, the Bardin-Niskala Duo works with students of all ages in master classes and workshops and also co-directs the Winterhaven Chamber Music Retreat\, an adult amateur chamber music festival held in January in New Hampshire. \n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nAn-Lin Bardin\, Cello \nDescribed as “stunning\,” by the New York Times\, cellist An-Lin Bardin currently freelances and teaches both music and math in the greater NYC area. As the cellist of the Vinca Quartet\, she performed extensively throughout Europe and the US\, including Carnegie’s Weill Hall\, Aspen\, and Vilar Performing Arts Center. Bardin’s performances have been broadcast on Deutschlandradio and WNYC. \nShe is a laureate of several international quartet competitions\, including the Paolo Borciani Quartet Competitions in Reggio Emilia\, Italy\, and the Fischoff\, the Plowman\, the Yellow Springs\, Chesapeake\, and the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competitions in the United States. A recipient of a DAAD fellowship which enabled her to work with the Vogler String Quartet in Stuttgart\, Germany\, Bardin also studied extensively with Gunter Pichler and Valentin Erben of the Alban Berg Quartet\, Walter Levine\, Heime Mueller\, and the Artemis String Quartet under the auspices of the ProQuartet program in Paris\, France\, and with the Emerson String Quartet through the Carnegie Hall Chamber Music Workshops. She was a graduate assistant to the Takacs Quartet at the University of Colorado at Boulder for two years as part of the graduate quartet residency program. \nA strong proponent of music education\, Bardin was a founding member of Music Haven\, an intensive mentorship program serving youth from low-income neighborhoods in New Haven\, Connecticut. She also founded two ongoing music educational programs in rural Washington State through the Gorgeous Sounds Residency Program. Raised in California by two nuclear physicists\, Bardin began her cello studies at the age of eight with Irene Sharp. She holds a B.S. from Yale University in Geology and Geophysics\, and an M.M. from the Yale School of Music\, where she studied with Aldo Parisot and was a member of the Grammy-Award-winning Yale Cellos. \nNaomi Niskala\, Piano \nA soloist and chamber musician who has appeared in Europe\, North America\, Russia\, Israel\, Thailand\, and Japan\, pianist Naomi Niskala’s performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio\, Deutschlandradio\, RTV Germany\, and NPR’s Performance Today. \nNiskala performs regularly with Spectrum Concerts Berlin\, one of Germany’s leading chamber organizations\, and has also recorded two discs with them. Recent performance highlights include the San Francisco Symphony Chamber Series at Davies Symphony Hall\, soloist with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic of Russia\, and solo and chamber performances with Spectrum Concerts Berlin in the Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal of Berlin\, Carnegie’s Weill Hall\, in Thailand\, and in Kosovo. Her release of the only complete recordings of American composer Robert Helps’s solo piano works on two discs with Albany Records in 2007 was met with high acclaim\, and she has also recorded piano chamber works of Robert Helps and Ursula Mamlok with Spectrum Concerts Berlin for two discs on Naxos\, as well as the world premiere of Mamlok’s 2015 quintet “Breezes” for Bridge Records. Niskala is featured in the 2013 German rbb television documentary entitled “Sehnsucht Musik” (Searching for Music)\, documenting the work of four members of Spectrum Concerts Berlin towards improving the harsh conditions for young musicians at a music school located in Prizren\, Kosovo. \nBorn to Japanese/Finnish-American parents\, she began studying piano at the age of three\, raised in Rochester\, New York\, and then later in Tokyo\, Japan. Niskala holds degrees from the Yale School of Music\, Stony Brook University\, and the New England Conservatory of Music\, where she studied with Claude Frank\, Gilbert Kalish\, and Patricia Zander. She also worked with pianists Leon Fleisher\, Menahem Pressler\, Peter Serkin\, and Maria Louisa Faini\, and violinists Louis Krasner and Eugene Lehner. Niskala is currently Professor of Music at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania\, where she teaches piano and theory\, and leads a summer chamber music exchange program to Japan. He enjoys discovering and sharing practices that help people return to a peaceful state that feels like home. But it was in Qigong that he found a practice that enriched his life so much that he absolutely needed to share its benefits with others. \nHe received his Qigong teaching certifications from Masters Lee Holden\, Robert Peng\, and Ken Cohen. DESCRIPTION:On the Trail\nFriday\, February 27 at 7:00 PM (Doors open at 6:30 PM)\nTickets: $25 \nOn the Trail is a modern acoustic band that explores everything from bluegrass to contemporary pop\, from stunning instrumentals to beautiful traditional songs. A special collaboration between On the Trail and a classical string quartet will bring together the classical and bluegrass communities\, featuring bluegrass\, country\, western swing\, and American-inspired classical music. \nThis program\, originally performed in collaboration with the New Haven Symphony\, will be used as inspiration for other symphonies and quartets interested in closing the gap between vernacular\, commercial American styles and American classical music. \n \nOn the Trail was founded through their mutual love of bluegrass and the Punch Brothers band. They have already gained recognition and praise for their exploration and strong execution of challenging music and their new original music. \nIn 2024\, On the Trail performed throughout the northeast\, including the Podunk Bluegrass Festival\, the Ossipee Valley Music Festival\, the Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival\, and Bluegrass in Heaven in Lake George\, NY. In 2022\, On the Trail had the honor of winning the Thomas Point Beach Band Competition after participating in 2021’s Telefunken Battle of the Bands at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival. They were also selected as an Emerging Artist at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in 2023. \nOn The Trail features Austin Scelzo (fiddle and vocals)\, Tom Polizzi (mandolin and vocals)\, Charlie Widmer (guitar and vocals)\, and Matt Curley (upright bass and vocals). Banjos\, fiddles\, guitars\, dobros\, mandolins\, bass\, and similar acoustic instruments welcome. \nHOSTED BY AUSTIN SCELZO\nAustin Scelzo (Danbury\, CT) first studied various fiddle traditions at Mark O’Connor’s Berklee String Camps and over time learned all the bluegrass instruments as well as singing and songwriting. During four years as a middle school music teacher\, his bluegrass journey began with performing in CT-based bands and teaching in-person and online. Now full-time in bluegrass\, Austin performs with respected veterans The Rock Hearts and the Americana quartet On the Trail\, teaches jam camps and has created groundbreaking online instruction materials. DESCRIPTION:LOVE & HEARTBREAK \nValentine’s Day Concert\nSaturday\, February 14th\, 8 PM (Doors at 7 PM)\nTickets: $35 (One free drink with admission) \nCelebrate Valentine’s Day by immersing yourself in songs of love and heartbreak. \nLocal musicians Simon Bilyk and Lana Auerbach\, along with friends Kal Sugatski and Jill Emerson\, will perform string quartet covers of your favorite classic and pop love songs\, including music by Elvis\, James Taylor\, The Beatles\, The Bee Gees\, Adele\, Lady Gaga\, Diana Ross\, and ABBA. \nBring your valentine or come solo – all are welcome. \nMake a night of it\, and grab an early dinner reservation at one of the Georgetown restaurants before the show. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nSimon Bilyk \nViolinist and Georgetown resident Simon Bilyk maintains a varied freelance career in Connecticut and across New England. In addition to his position with the Hartford Symphony\, he is a member of the New Haven and Eastern Connecticut Symphonies. Simon is also the principal second violinist of the Bangor Symphony (in Maine)\, where he grew up and heard his first live orchestra. Simon earned his degrees from Oberlin Conservatory (B.M.) and Purchase College (M.M.)\, where he studied with Milan Vitek and Laurie Smukler. He plays on a violin made by Raymond Melanson in 2006. Simon repairs and restores bows (see his work at simonsbows.com) and enjoys refereeing youth soccer. \nLana Auerbach \n \nLana Auerbach is a violinist based in Newtown\, Connecticut. She is a recent graduate of Bard College’s Orchestral Training Masters “The Orchestra Now”. She enjoys performing a wide range of genres between her chamber ensemble\, the Solstice Piano Trio\, her old time/bluegrass band Bugs On A Log\, and many orchestras throughout the Northeast as concertmaster of the Woodstock Symphony\, The Syracuse Orchestra\, and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic\, to name a few. She is a devoted chamber musician and has spent her summers at many international chamber festivals\, including Windwood Music Festival\, Brancaleoni Music Festival\, and ENCORE Chamber Institue among many others. \nKal Sugatski \nKal Sugatski is a violist and imaginative creator known for their “soul satisfying\, bold\, political and creative” organizing and curating. A dynamic musician\, Kal has performed with the New York Philharmonic\, Pittsburgh Symphony\, NYC Ballet\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, and ChamberQUEER\, as well as The National\, Andrea Boccelli\, and Stevie Wonder. \nKal’s season highlights include performances as principal violist of Orchestra of St. Luke’s\, a collaboration with Paul Taylor Dance Company\, touring with American Contemporary Music Ensemble\, and performing on Broadway. \nKal was named Mainer of the Year for Vigorous Tenderness\, their radically envisioned outdoor chamber music series in Maine centered around composers of color and other marginalized voices in classical music. He has made over a dozen records of his music with various ensembles including 3 LPs with his avant-country outfit Laila and Smitty\, a handful of self-produced solo records\, and jazz records with his quartet and trio for Whirlwind Recordings and Out of Your Head Records. Longtime jazz writer for The Chicago Reader Peter Margasak calls Kenny “A player of great imagination and subtlety who always seems to focus on an ensemble-oriented sound even on his own recordings”. As a side-person Warren has recently recorded with The Angelica Sanchez Nonet\, Stephan Crump’s Passerine and Slow Water\, The Anna Webber/Angela Morris Large Ensemble\, and Tony Malaby’s Jersey Condombe. He has toured internationally with Jamie Baum\, Bonobo\, and Slavic Soul Party who has held a weekly residency at Barbes in Brooklyn for over 20 years. Warren grew up in Denver\, CO where he was inspired at a young age by the generosity and artistry of the late great Ron Miles. \nChristopher Hoffman is a cellist\, composer\, producer\, engineer and filmmaker. He currently performs in Henry Threadgill’s Pulitzer Prize winning ensemble Zooid\, Grammy-Nominated Anat Cohen Tentet\, Kenny Warren’s Sweet World\, Darius Jones Quintet and his own projects. He has directed several music videos\, 3 short films and BTS pieces for feature films. His short “You Dog Likes Me More Than You” is available to view on Amazon Prime and his short “Salamander” is currently screening in American and European festivals. He served as the Director of Production and Engineering at New School for 17 years. He has worked with Martin Scorsese\, Yoko Ono\, Jack Antonoff\, Iron & Wine\, Ryan Adams\, Jack Huston\, Marianne Faithfull\, Michael Pitt & Pagoda\, Marc Ribot\, Butch Morris\, Lee Konitz\, Anna Webber\, Ryan Scott\, Anthony Coleman\, Jeremiah Cymerman and many others. \nNathan Ellman-Bell is one of NYC’s most versatile and in demand drummers. He co-leads the avant-pop band Wild Idol with singer Nora Palka\, and the Brooklyn jazz-rock band Slow Tiger. He plays with countless bands including those of Sebastien Amman\, Olli Hirvonen\, Kenny Warren\, Michael Sarian\, and Aleksi Glick. He is also a member of Brass Against who he has recorded and toured with extensively. In 2024 Brass Against spent 3 months in Europe on tour which included a five week run in support of the rock band Tool. He enjoys discovering and sharing practices that help people return to a peaceful state that feels like home. For the past 15 years he’s explored many different types of meditation modalities ranging from transcendental meditation and mantra meditation to mindfulness and breathwork. But it was in Qigong that he found a practice that enriched his life so much that he absolutely needed to share its benefits with others. \nHe received his Qigong teaching certifications from Masters Lee Holden\, Robert Peng\, and Ken Cohen. He also works 1-on-1 with clients through personalized Qigong and Daoist Coaching. \nMegan Yee combines her identities as a psychotherapist and violinist to explore the intersection of wellness\, creativity\, and embodied healing. This concert features two masterpieces of the piano trio repertoire: Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor\, Op. 17\, and Johannes Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major\, Op. 8. \nThrough both performance and brief discussion\, the Solstice Trio will illuminate the intricate ties of influence\, respect\, and affection that link Schumann and Brahms\, exploring how their personal stories are woven into the fabric of these expressive and brilliant chamber works. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe Solstice Trio is an accomplished piano trio featuring violinist Lana Auerbach\, cellist Adam Willson\, and pianist Charlotte Hill. Known for their vibrant and collaborative energy\, the trio is passionate about connecting with audiences through shared intimate musical experiences. \nThe three members met while studying at Oberlin Conservatory and have since cultivated impressive careers as performers and educators. Violinist Lana Auerbach\, based in Newtown\, Connecticut\, is a recent graduate of Bard College’s “The Orchestra Now” Orchestral Masters program and a frequent participant in international chamber music festivals. Cellist Adam Willson\, a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and Vermont Symphony Orchestra\, has performed solo\, chamber\, and orchestral works in concert halls across the U.S. Pianist Charlotte Hill is a multifaceted artist and educator\, currently pursuing her Doctorate at Stony Brook University. An avid chamber musician\, she co-runs Music at Port Milford\, a celebrated summer chamber music festival and academy. \nThe Solstice Trio takes its name from a tradition born of the members’ commitment to direct\, personal musical interaction. Every year on the summer solstice\, the trio gathers to host a house concert for friends and community members. This yearly event has defined their mission to break down barriers between audience and performer\, fostering communal\, shared experiences of music.

Come to listen\, come to jam\, come to learn. Live music from the Granite House Bluegrass band starting at 8 PM\, an easy\, led slow bluegrass jam for beginner and intermediate players starting at 7:30\, and late night jamming open to all. Banjos\, fiddles\, guitars\, dobros\, mandolins\, bass\, and similar acoustic instruments welcome. \nHOSTED BY AUSTIN SCELZO\nAustin Scelzo (Danbury\, CT) first studied various fiddle traditions at Mark O’Connor’s Berklee String Camps and over time learned all the bluegrass instruments as well as singing and songwriting. During four years as a middle school music teacher\, his bluegrass journey began with performing in CT-based bands and teaching in-person and online. Now full-time in bluegrass\, Austin performs with respected veterans The Rock Hearts and the Americana quartet On the Trail\, teaches jam camps and has created groundbreaking online instruction materials. He has been named Connecticut Arts Hero and nominated as Mentor of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. \nPart of The Granite Bluegrass Series \nBluegrass Nights at The Granite is a recipient of the 2026 IBMA Foundation Project Grant. Bring any acoustic string instrument and make new friends playing old-timey tunes with other musicians. \nFor an excellent representation of the types of music played at these jams\, listen to The Old Time 100 album by Tristan Scoggins and George Jackson here. \nCome as you are\, give as you can.
