SUMMARY:Upstream to Bach
DESCRIPTION:Charles Ives Music Festival Presents “UPSTREAM TO BACH”\nSaturday\, December 12\, 2026\, 7 PM (Doors 6 PM)\nTickets $40 \nFeaturing: \n\nGeorge Meyer\, violin\nWill Healy\, piano\n\nMusicians\, composers\, and collaborators George Meyer and Will Healy form the genre-bending violin-piano duo Upstream. They draw on a shared background in classical music\, as well as a range of other styles. Will and George each live with a foot outside of classical music\, George working regularly with bluegrass musicians and Will with jazz and hip-hop artists. \nJoin these engaging and exceptionally talented musicians as they perform a selection of marvelous original works along with Bach’s brilliant Sonata No. 6 for Violin and Harpsichord. \nABOUT CHARLES IVES MUSIC FESTIVAL\nThe Charles Ives Music Festival\, a program of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra\, offers aspiring musicians the opportunity to perform side-by-side with world-class artist-faculty in chamber music groups and in the CIMF Orchestra. CIMF Artist-Faculty hold positions in major American Orchestras\, lead chamber ensembles\, and perform on Broadway. In addition to our educational programs\, the CIMF Artist Concerts\, open to the public\, are a professional series performed by CIMF Artist-Faculty and guest artists. They honor the legacy of Charles Ives through performances of his works\, music of other American composers and musicians\, and music that transcends the traditional boundaries of classical music to incorporate other styles of music. \nMEET THE ARTISTS\nGeorge Meyer\, violin \n Charles Ives Music Festival artist-faculty violinist/violist/composer George Meyer is equally interested in classical music and fiddle playing\, and the music he writes draws on both sources. He has performed his own compositions in a wide variety of settings\, from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to the 92nd Street Y. He has been commissioned by The US Army Strings\, Chamber Music Northwest\, Katie Hyun with Astral Artists\, Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg\, the Aizuri Quartet\, the New York Classical Players\, and Bravo! Vail. \nSummer 2026 featured the premieres of three commissions: a Concertino for Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg at the Carmel Bach Festival\, a piece for four violins at the Aspen Music Festival\, and a celebration of America 250 for Midsummer’s Music in Door County\, Wisconsin. Recent highlights also include the premiere of a Triple Concerto for two violins and viola with Emma Frucht\, Brian Hong\, and George as soloists with the New York Classical Players and Music Director Dongmin Kimin in four NYC concerts. \nUpstream\, a violin-piano duo project with pianist-composer Will Healy\, made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2025 and recorded an album of 11 original co-compositions scheduled to be released in the spring of 2027. \nOther projects include a duo with his father\, bassist Edgar Meyer\, as they perform traditional\, original\, and co-written works and have toured with Sam Bush and Mike Marshall. George and Edgar are on the road again with Mike Marshall in 2026 and 2027. \nGeorge holds degrees from Harvard College and the Juilliard School\, and he is faculty at Juilliard’s Extension Division and artist-faculty of the Charles Ives Music Festival. \nWill Healy\, piano \nCharles Ives Music Festival guest artist Will Healy is a composer\, pianist\, and improviser whose work engages with many of the musical worlds in New York City\, from classical concert halls to jazz clubs and hip-hop shows. A recipient of the 2023 Leonard Bernstein Prize from the ASCAP Foundation\, he is passionate about both tradition and innovation. He has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and National Sawdust\, with his compositions played by ensembles such as the Alarm Will Sound\, The Minnesota Orchestra\, Contemporaneous\, and Friction Quartet. His arranging credits include the New York Philharmonic\, Donda\, the Albany Symphony\, and others. \nHealy is the artistic director and founder of ShoutHouse\, a collective of hip-hop\, jazz\, and classical musicians. Described by U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins as “sweetly and smartly off the rails”\, ShoutHouse has premiered over 50 new works\, and their debut full-length album\, Cityscapes\, came out on New Amsterdam Records\, featuring “a lavishly orchestrated\, absolutely unique blend of postrock\, art-rock and indie classical.” (New York Music Daily). \nAs a pianist\, Healy has performed solo recitals in the United States and abroad\, including programs of original music\, world premieres of pieces by other composers\, and a wide variety of works from the classical repertoire. Healy has performed the works of J.S. Bach extensively\, including the complete Goldberg Variations and Well-Tempered Clavier. Healy plays piano and synthesizers in Pathos Trio\, an award-winning metal-influenced chamber group that has premiered dozens of new works. Healy is also a founding member of Upstream\, a duo with violinist and composer George Meyer. He is the composer-in-residence for Midsummer’s Music\, Wisconsin’s longest-running chamber music series. \nHealy’s composition awards include The American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Charles Ives Scholarship\, two ASCAP Morton Gould Awards\, Vassar College’s W.K. Rose Fellowship\, a J-Fund commission\, and residencies at the Bogliasco\, Willapa Bay AiR\, and Brush Creek Foundations. Healy has written chamber and orchestral pieces for the New York Philharmonic’s Bandwagon and YPC Concert series performances\, including an original work for rapper and orchestra performed by the New York Philharmonic. Healy received his M.M. in Composition from The Juilliard School\, where his mentors included Samuel Adler\, John Corigliano\, and Steven Stucky.
